We consider a Bertrand duopoly with homogeneous goods and we allow for asymmetric marginal costs. We derive the Myopic Stable Set in pure strategies as introduced by Demuynck et al.. In contrast to the set of Nash equilibria, the unique Myopic Stable Set can be easily characterized in closed form and it provides an intuitive set-valued prediction.

Summary In this contribution, I discuss the perceptual potential of certain genres of experimental and contemporary music, commonly grouped under the label “sound-based music”. The sonic patterns typical of this music are mostly associated, during listening, with visual and tactile sensory qualities and can evoke mental representations as shapes in motion. These are the result of physical-acoustic energies organized according to a perceptual grammar whose organization follows a series of Gestalt and kinaesthetic principles. The paper explores the nature of the (...) relationship between sound patterns of sound-based music and their mental images. Based on morphodynamic theory, it is proposed the emergence of cognitive image schemas, which are at the centre of this relationship. The image schemas depict the forces and tensions of our experience of the world (e.g., figure-background, near-far, superimposition, compulsion, blockage), as being the cognitive and experiential response to the incoming sound patterns. The sense of this music activates precisely the basic structures of sensorimotor experience by which we encounter a world that we can understand and act within, leading to a rich series of high-level associations and responses. BackgroundSexual minority (SM) older adults experience mental health disparities. Psychiatric disorders and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are risk factors for cognitive decline. Although older people in same-sex (SSR) compared to mixed-sex relationships (MSR) perform more poorly on cognitive screening tests, prior studies found no differences in rates of dementia diagnosis or neuropsychological profiles. We sought to explore the role of NPS on neurocognitive outcomes for SM populations. We compared cognitive performance and structural brain parameters of older adults in SSR and MSR.MethodsData (...) were originally collected at Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers (ADRCs). Inclusion criteria were: age of 55+ years, a study partner identified as a spouse/partner, and availability of T1-MRI brain volumes/thickness. Participants were labeled as either SSR or MSR based on their/their co-participant's reported sex. We identified 1,073 participants (1,037 MSR−555 cognitively unimpaired [CU]; 36 SSR−23 CU) with structural MRI data, Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), and Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire (NPI-Q) scores. A subset of the overall sample completed comprehensive neuropsychological assessment (n = 939; 908 MSR−494 CU; 31 SSR−22 CU). Covariates included in statistical models were age, sex, education, total intracranial volume, and apolipoprotein E genotype.ResultsMultivariate general linear models showed significant diagnosis-by-relationship interaction effects on the left parahippocampal gyrus volume. After stratification by relationship group, only cognitively impaired (CI) MSR had significantly smaller left parahippocampal volumes than MSR-CU. The SSR group showed better episodic memory performance. Severity of neuropsychiatric symptoms was negatively associated with volume/thickness of bilateral fronto-temporal areas and with MMSE scores, predominantly in the MSR group.ConclusionIn our study, MSR participants presented with a more compromised cognitive profile than SSR participants. MSR-CI participants showed significantly smaller left medio-temporal volumes, a neural signature of AD. Neuropsychiatric symptoms predicted smaller fronto-temporal volumes in the MSR more consistently than in the SSR group. These findings may be due to unexplored protective factors against cognitive decline in SM elders. Indeed, social support has been proposed as a protective factor warranting future investigation. This paper focuses on the reception of Aristotle’s writings from 100 BC to early Neoplatonism. The 1stcentury BC is marked by a renaissance of interest in Aristotle’s acroamatic treatises, in connection to Andronicus’ editorial work (whatever its precise character). This is a well known fact, but it is worth noting that interpreters of Aristotle between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD were only familiar with a limited set of treatises (in particular, Aristotle’s Categories, Rhetoric, Topics and De (...) caelo). The Academic Eudorus of Alexandria was a partial exception, since he was probably acquainted with parts of Aristotle’s Metaphysics. Aristotle’s exoteric dialogues remained a majour source for those interested in Aristotle well into the 2ndcentury AD. Finally, late-hellenistic compendia and handbooks provided second-hand information on Aristotle’s philosophy. It is only between the 2ndand the 3rdcenturies that the Peripatetic commentators developed a systematic reading of the whole corpus of Aristotle’s acroamatic treatises. Their work culminated with Alexander of Aphrodisias, whose exegesis laid the basis for the subsequent incorporation of Aristotle within Neoplatonism accomplished by Plotinus and Porphyry. (shrink)

Cet article porte sur Métaphysique, Z, 11. On examine en particulier la lecture par Frede et Patzig de la première partie de ce chapitre. Selon ces derniers, Aristote affirme : (1) que les définitions des substances naturelles sont exprimées à partir de leur forme et que toute référence à la matière doit être exclue de la définition ; (2) que les formes naturelles sont néanmoins liées de manière nécessaire et interne à un certain type de matière, car elles ne peuvent (...) exister sans certaines parties matérielles. En réalité, une lecture attentive du chapitre ne permet de soutenir ni (1) ni (2). Un être humain ne diffère pas d’un cercle de bronze en raison de son instantiation nécessaire dans un certain type de matière. La différence consiste plutôt dans l’existence de parties fonctionnelles. Les parties fonctionnelles peuvent être mentionnées, en tant qu’elles sont fonctionnelles, dans la définition formelle des substances naturelles. (shrink)

This paper offers an analysis of a hitherto neglected text on insoluble propositions dating from the late XiVth century and puts it into perspective within the context of the contemporary debate concerning semantic paradoxes. The author of the text is the italian logician Peter of Mantua (d. 1399/1400). The treatise is relevant both from a theoretical and from a historical standpoint. By appealing to a distinction between two senses in which propositions are said to be true, it offers an unusual (...) solution to the paradox, but in a traditional spirit that contrasts a number of trends prevailing in the XiVth century. It also counts as a remarkable piece of evidence for the reconstruction of the reception of English logic in italy, as it is inspired by the views of John Wyclif. Three approaches addressing the Liar paradox (Albert of Saxony, William Heytesbury and a version of strong restrictionism) are first criticised by Peter of Mantua, before he presents his own alternative solution. The latter seems to have a prima facie intuitive justification, but is in fact acceptable only on a very restricted understanding, since its generalisation is subject to the so-called revenge problem. Predatory journals and conferences are an emerging problem in scientific literature as they have financial motives, without guaranteeing scientific quality and exposure. The main objective of the ASGLOS project is to investigate the predatory e‐email characteristics, management, and possible consequences and to analyse the extent of the current problem at each academic level. To collect the personal experiences of physicians’ mailboxes on predatory publishing, a Google Form® survey was designed and disseminated from September 2021 to April 2022. A total of (...) 978 responses were analysed from 58 countries around the world. A total of 64.8% of participants indicated the need for 3 or fewer emails to acquire a criticality view in distinguishing a real invitation from a spam, while 11.5% still have doubt regardless of how many emails they get. The AGLOS Study clearly highlights the problem of academic e‐mail spam by predatory journals and conferences. Our findings signify the importance of providing academic career‐oriented advice and organising training sessions to increase awareness of predatory publishing for those conducting scientific research. Lo studio dello scetticismo medievale è in Dal Pra anche proposta di un pensiero critico che si pone come alternativa alla storiografia idealista e alle indagini puramente filologiche. Giovanni di Salisbury, Nicola d'Autrecourt e l'impossibilità di una fondazione teorica della filosofia.

Il problema filosofico di Boezio, già chiaro sin dalla comparsa sulla scena di Filosofia, risiede nel tentativo di chiarire come si possano avere conoscenze stabili, cioè necessarie, di cose mutevoli, cioè contingenti, ed è un problema di coesistenza tra le une e le altre. Una lettura filosofica che, trasposta in termini teologici, porta a questa idea di creazione: un mondo contingente creato da un Dio, in sé necessario, che nel momento in cui crea lo fa in relazione ai suoi modi (...) di conoscere, cioè necessitando in modo condizionato le cose esistenti. In tal modo, egli fonda la nostra conoscenza del mondo e quella di noi stessi che il mondo vediamo, pensiamo e giudichiamo mentre vediamo, pensiamo e giudichiamo di vedere, pensare e giudicare il mondo.La storia della Consolatio Philosophiae è la storia tragica di quell’ipotetico generale, di cui scrive Musil, che per ragioni strategiche manda dei battaglioni alla morte sicura, ed è un assassino se si pensa che si tratta di migliaia di figli di mamma; ma diventa subito qualcos’altro se si connette il fatto con altri pensieri, per esempio con la necessità del sacrificio o la brevità della vita. È poi la storia tragica della presa d’atto di quanto sia utile ma falso il tentativo di chi considera la vita che si presenta dinnanzi come un dato fisso e fermo. E lo è perché è la contemporanea storia del tragico tentativo di fondare il pensiero sul mondo a partire dalla consapevolezza che il mondo potrebbe mutare in ogni istante in tutte le direzioni, o almeno in una qualunque di esse. Résumé — En Enn., VI, 3 [44], 5, Plotin fait usage de doctrines péripatéticiennes concernant la substance, l’inhérence et la prédication. Ces doctrines correspondent de manière frappante à l’interprétation anti-extensionaliste de la substance physique développée par Alexandre d’Aphrodise contre les thèses des commentateurs plus anciens . Le parallèle entre Plotin et Alexandre ne doit cependant pas conduire à penser que Plotin se borne à suivre les thèses du commentateur, et que leurs doctrines soient donc identiques. Plotin vise plutôt à transposer (...) les principes de l’hylémorphisme d’Alexandre dans un contexte philosophique différent, fondé sur des prémisses métaphysiques qui portent sur la causalité des substances intelligibles. Comme Plotin le montre en VI, 3 [44], la forme hylémorphique n’est en effet pas substance : elle s’identifie à un amas de qualités accidentelles qui dépendent d’une essence véritable et extra-physique, le logos. On parvient à des conclusions analogues si l’on aborde la discussion de la causalité démiurgique chez Alexandre et Plotin. Les deux auteurs adressent des critiques approfondies au modèle artisanal de la causalité . Il n’est pas invraisemblable que les thèses d’Alexandre d’Aphrodise aient joué un rôle dans la genèse de la doctrine plotinienne de la causalité. Il faut cependant remarquer, encore une fois, que le cadre conceptuel dans lequel s’inscrivent les critiques de la causalité démiurgique chez Alexandre et chez Plotin est très différent. Pour Alexandre, la causalité démiurgique est rejetée en faveur d’une doctrine cosmologique de la finalité, qui rattache les récurrences naturelles aux mouvements cycliques des astres. Pour Plotin, en revanche, l’ordre naturel s’explique par l’action de principes extra-physiques et sa critique de la causalité démiurgique ne se comprend qu’à l’intérieur de la doctrine de la causalité des êtres intelligibles.Hylémorphisme et causalité des intelligibles.— In Enn., VI, 3 [44], 5 Plotinus outlines some doctrines regarding substance, inherence and predication. Such doctrines are similar to the anti-extensionalist reading of Aristotle’s physical substance that was developed by Alexander of Aphrodisias against previous Aristotelian commentators . The parallel between Plotinus and Alexander is striking : it can safely be inferred that Plotinus’ discussion is based on that of the commentator. This, however, should not lead to assume that Plotinus simply follows Alexander, so that their theories of physical substance are identical. Instead, Plotinus aims to transpose the philosophical principles of Alexander’s Peripatetic hylomorphism into a different doctrinal framework, where metaphysical premises involving the intelligible substances and their causality play a prominent role. As Plotinus shows in VI, 3 [44], the hylomorphic form is not a substance, but a bundle of accidental properties depending on an extra-physical substantial principle, i.e. the logos. The analysis of Alexander’s and Plotinus’ discussions of demiurgic causality lead to the same conclusions. Both philosophers criticize the demiurgic scheme of causality . It can reasonably be assumed that Alexander of Aphrodisias’ treatment played a role in the genesis of Plotinus’ view of causality. However, it is worth noting that the criticism of demiurgic causality has a quite different position within the systems of the two philosophers. Alexander rejects the presence of a demiurgic cause in favour of a cosmological conception of finalism, where natural recurrences are regarded as depending on the cyclical motions of the stars. According to Plotinus, instead, the order of nature is completely caused by extra-physical principles ; his criticism of demiurgic causality points to his doctrine of intelligible causes. (shrink)

Plotin discute à plusieurs reprises de la mémoire, de sa fonction et de son rôle dans la connaissance. Dans la longue section qui va de IV 3 [27], 25 à IV 4 [28], 5, il s’interroge sur « ce qui » se remémore, c’est-à-dire sur le sujet de la mémoire. L’examen de ces chapitres permet de recueillir quelques éléments caractéristiques de la théorie plotinienne de la connaissance. Plotin fait une rigoureuse distinction entre la mémoire et la simple conservation d’impressions sensibles (...) et associe la mémoire à une capacité spontanée de l’âme. L’âme, d’autre part, en tant que sujet de la mémoire, est pourtant toujours caractérisée par un type de pensée discursif et lié au temps. De ce type de connaissance, Plotin distingue la pensée la plus élevée, qui appartient à l’âme grâce à la partie d’elle-même qui n’est pas descendue de l’Intellect, lequel est étranger au temps et à la discursivité. L’étude du sujet de la mémoire fournit des éclaircissements sur la structure de l’âme chez Plotin, sur le rôle de l’imagination (phantasia), sur le caractère intrinsèquement dynamique de l’âme, capable de redéfinir sa propre nature en accord avec la faculté qui joue en elle le rôle de centre unificateur. Au sommet se trouve une condition cognitive dans laquelle l’âme saisit, même « ici-bas », avant sa séparation du corps, les Formes intelligibles, au moyen d’une connaissance appropriée et indépendante de toute forme de mémoire et de discursivité (cf. IV 4 [28], 4-5). Par conséquent, le rôle de la réminiscence dans l’épistémologie plotinienne est plutôt limité. (shrink)

L’énorme besoin incarné par la pandémie et la double transition verte et numérique rend trois scénarios crédibles. Si le premier consiste à se résigner à l’accélération vers le bas de la communauté mondiale, et si le second voit la Chine en position prédominante, il existe un troisième scénario qui vaut la peine d’être considéré, à savoir la Nouvelle Renaissance. Nous voyons d’abord le premier problème que pose l’idée d’une Nouvelle Renaissance : elle reste centrée sur l’Europe. L’invention de nouvelles matières (...) premières a donné naissance à de nouveaux modes de production. D’où le deuxième problème : quelles seront ses nouvelles formes, c’est-à-dire comment identifier et sélectionner ce qui est ou sera la Nouvelle Renaissance? Il s’agit d’un projet à long terme, ce qui soulève le troisième problème : comment impliquer les citoyens? Mais nous savons qu’une Nouvelle Renaissance ne peut avoir lieu sans la volonté des communautés d’exercer leur autonomie épistémique ( sapere aude! ) face aux défis et aux nouvelles technologies. À l’époque où les transhumanistes font appel à l’œuvre teilhardienne pour y retrouver les fondements intellectuels de leur projet de transformation de l’humain, il semble pertinent d’interroger le discours sur l’humain propre à Teilhard, suspendu entre pensée évolution-niste et christologie cosmique. Présente transversalement dans les écrits du jésuite français, la notion de personne, enquêtée en profondeur, permet de « tester » la conciliabilité de son anthropologie avec les idées-clés du transhumanisme. Qui est Teilhard de Chardin? Le partisan d’un naturalisme réductionniste? (...) Ou l’héritier d’un humanisme chrétien qui voit en la personne un être spirituel incarné, transcendant la Nature et le Monde? Peut-on parler d’un personnalisme teilhardien, proche de celui de Mounier? Cela fait l’objet d’un débat qui se déroule au sein du mouvement personnaliste, dans les pages de la revue Esprit au début des années 1960. Prendre en compte les moments forts de ce débat paraît ainsi un bon tremplin pour creuser le regard que Teilhard porte sur l’être humain, à l’ère où les transhumanistes tentent de s’approprier son héritage spirituel. Bobbio est l'un des fondateurs et l'un des principaux représentants de la théorie du droit de tendance analytique, qui constitue aujourd'hui le courant le plus important du positivisme juridique. Pour lui, à la différence d'un Kelsen, le droit n'est rien d'autre qu'un discours, un ensemble d'actes de communication linguistique prescriptifs, c'est-à-dire des énoncés (ni vrais, ni faux), visant à influer sur la conduite d'autrui. Par conséquent, la science juridique n'est pas une science " normative ", mais plus simplement une analyse (...) linguistique : l'analyse du discours du législateur. La science du droit est ainsi réduite par Bobbio à un " discours sur un discours ", un métalangage descriptif. Mais, dans la mesure où ce discours remplit une fonction sociale, la théorie du droit constitue aussi un instrument d'analyse du pouvoir et le droit peut être compris comme un ordre qui organise l'usage de la force. La méthode analytique jette ainsi un jour nouveau sur les grands problèmes de la méthodologie et de la théorie du droit. L'ouvrage est enrichi d'une étude sur l'œuvre et la méthode de Bobbio, par Riccardo Guastini, professeur à l'Université de Gênes, l'un des meilleurs représentants actuels de l'école analytique italienne. Online controlled experiments, also known as A/B tests, have become ubiquitous. While many practical challenges in running experiments at scale have been thoroughly discussed, the ethical dimension of A/B testing has been neglected. This article fills this gap in the literature by introducing a new, soft ethics and governance framework that explicitly recognizes how the rise of an experimentation culture in industry settings brings not only unprecedented opportunities to businesses but also significant responsibilities. More precisely, the article (a) introduces a (...) set of principles to encourage ethical and responsible experimentation to protect users, customers, and society; (b) argues that ensuring compliance with the proposed principles is a complex challenge unlikely to be addressed by resorting to a one-solution response; (c) discusses the relevance and effectiveness of several mechanisms and policies in educating, governing, and incentivizing companies conducting online controlled experiments; and (d) offers a list of prompting questions specifically designed to help and empower practitioners by stimulating specific ethical deliberations and facilitating coordination among different groups of stakeholders. One can say, then, that Imperial philosophers look at themselves in the same way that we call “modern,” when they study the “ancients,” from which they depend and from which they come from. In fact, beginning with the first century A.D. the followers of long-standing philosophical traditions start feeling the novelty, and thus the modernity, of the issues that were raised by their own age. At first glance a work focused on Posthumous works of Montesquieu might seem to be an old fashioned pursuit. Philosophy has come widely under attack from various viewpoints, throughout the world. Moreover, this dominant perspective seems to become always more natural for one part of the population in some countries. For instance, we think about the statements of the president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro and his policy of cuts in the funding for universities; we have in mind the articles of (...) the financial journalist Stefano Feltri whereby Philosophy would be useless2 or certain declarations of the Italian Minister of Interior Matteo Salvini3. In 2015, the Minister Hakuban Shimomura encouraged an anti-humanistic policy in Japan4. Fortunately, there are also exceptions like the president of Ireland Michael D. This volume is the revised version of a Ph.D. dissertation at the Technische Universität Braunschweig under the direction of Claus-Heinrich Scheier. Like the one by Scheier, but not quite as large, this volume purports to provide a section to section commentary of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. It follows another path, though. This path is already made clear by Falke in the title of his book, which is a famous quotation, “conceived history.” In fact, this interpretation relies on the following three (...) premises. First, “in all experiences of consciousness Hegel refers himself to determinate historical positions”. Second, “the criticism of the form of consciousness implies at the same time an exposition of the whole system”. Third, “the Phenomenology is a work in progress”. These premises may appear at first sight puzzling. Nevertheless, they show coherence. Falke does not maintain that the Phenomenology refers to a set of historical events or positions, he rather says that it should be read “as a systematic reconstruction of historical positions”. That a criticism by Hegel implies a positive account of his own system is something every reader of the Phenomenology knows too well. What one tends to ignore is, as suggested by Falke, that the arguments of the Phenomenology grew to their final shape while Hegel was at work. The evidence for this assumption is to be found in the oftentimes irritating ruptures in the historical or material development, which evidently point to systematic reinterpretations of already composed text parts. Die Geisteswissenschaften zu verstehen, was sie sind und was sie erreichen konnen, ist heute, hundert Jahre nach Diltheys Tod, eine genauso wichtige Aufgabe wie zu dessen Lebzeiten. Diltheys Argumente und seine Position einer umfassenden philosophischen Grundlegung der Geisteswissenschaften sind auch heute noch von Bedeutung. Seine Verteidigung der Autonomie der geistigen Welt angesichts der positivistischen Herrschaftsanspruche liefert wichtige Gesichtspunkte fur die Evaluierung geisteswissenschaftlicher Forschung. Within a general approach that implies the closely related survey of neurosciences and philosophical thought, the essays collected in the volume develop two main lines of research. The first one, thanks to the contributions of scientists and psychologists , psychoanalysists and bioengineers , allows to fix the attention on the neurobiological, psychological, psychoanalytical and physical remembering. The second one, more specifically philosophical, is declined in three different approaches. the first - with essays by Stefania Achella, Giuseppe D'Anna and Rosario Diana (...) - points to the anlysis of the role played by the rememberance and the prefiguration in the processes of identity construction. The second - with contributions from Fiorella Battaglia, Anna Donise, Sabine Marienberg and Sara Fortuna - focuses on the role of remembering in anthropology and linguistics, as well as the identification of certain diseases of memory. The third, finally - with contributions from Gabriella Baptist, Chiara de Luzenberger and Marco Boninu - tends to define the regulatory function of memory. (shrink)

Le juge­ment de Trendelenburg, rejoint par Prantl, Zeller ou Inge, a long­temps pré­valu, selon lequel ils n’offriraient qu’une doctrine hybride et obscure, née de la juxtaposition des catégories d’Aristote et des genres du Sophiste. Leur partie critique ne présenterait guère plus d’intérêt, qui se limiterait à réaffirmer, contre Aristote, le dualisme platonicien...

Il De universalibus di Riccardo Brinkley è la seconda delle sette parti che costituiscono la Summa logicae. L'A., prima di fornire l'edizione del testo , conduce un'analisi dottrinale e comparativa. Perciò ne illustra struttura e contenuto, esplicitando il concetto di universale metafisico, la critica della concezione puramente semantica dell'universale, la natura dell'intentio universale, l'universale logico, la sua divisione. Brinkley esprime la sua contrarietà rispetto al concetto dell'universale logico come intentio in anima. La sezione successiva riguarda invece i cinque predicabili (...) di Porfirio, il genere, la specie, la differenza, il proprio e l'accidente. L'ultima parte del saggio è incentrata su alcune osservazioni comparative tra Brinkley e alcuni suoi contemporanei, come Guglielmo d'Ockham , Walter Burley , Giovanni Wyclif . L'A. conclude proponendo di considerare il De universalibus di Brinkley un testimone precoce dell'opposizione tardo medievale tra antiqui e moderni. In Brinkley l'universale metafisico ha il primato rispetto all'universale logico. ‘Néoconstitutionnalisme’ est assurément le nouveau nom pour une famille de théories du droit bien connues: un nom jusqu'à maintenant utilisé seulement au sein de la théorie du droit du monde latin. Mais contrairement à une critique récente de Riccardo Guastini, et conformément à une plus large analyse de ce mouvement dans mon dernier livre, Manuale di filosofia del diritto, le néoconstitutionnalisme existe effectivement – exactement comme le droit naturel, le positivisme juridique ou encore le réalisme juridique existent. Dans cette (...) contribution, en fait, trois thèmes centraux du néoconstitutionnalisme sont examinés – la connexion droit-morale, la distinction règle-principes et le balancement ou pondération – afin d’en fournir une meilleure théorie positiviste. Ainsi, je reconnais une connexion contigente mais théoriquement essentielle entre le droit et la morale; j’admets une distinction quasiment radicale entre les règles et les principes juridiques, et je fournis une théorie du balancement positiviste, réaliste et axiologiquement pluraliste. Perforation or gap formation in a vegetation is a major process in landscape transformation. The occurrence of gaps profoundly alters the microclimatical conditions in a vegetation. A method is proposed to quantify perforation by using the three main 2-D characteristics of the gaps: area, number and boundary length. New measures are developed by normalizing the observed values to the reference status of minimum and maximum perforation. As minimum perforation status, the presence of one single gap with area equal to the (...) map resolution is assumed. The new measures are combined using a 3-D Euclidean distance to visualize the process and to detect changes. The method is exemplified using a field case of gaps in a tropical terra firme rainforest at Tiputini, Ecuador. (shrink)

A couple of decades after becoming a major area of both public and philosophical concern, animal ethics continues its inroads into main- stream consciousness. Increasingly, philosophers, ethicists, professionals who use animals, and the broader public confront specific ethical issues regarding human use of animals as well as more fundamental questions about animals’ moral status. A parallel, related development is the explo- sion of interest in animals’ mental lives, as seen in exciting new work in cognitive ethology and in the plethora (...) of movies, television commercials, and popular books featuring apparently intelligent animals. -/- As we approach the turn of the twenty-first century, philosophical animal ethics is an area of both increasing diversity and unrealized poten- tial – a thesis supported by this essay as a whole. Following up on an earlier philosophical review of animal ethics (but without that review’s focus on animal research), the present article provides an updated narrative – one that offers some perspective on where we have been, a more detailed account of where we are, and a projection of where we might go. Each of the three major sections offers material that one is unlikely to find in other reviews of animal ethics: the first by viewing familiar territory in a different light (advancing the thesis that the utility-versus-rights debate in animal ethics is much less important than is generally thought); the second by reviewing major recent works that are not very well-known (at least to nonspecialists); and the third by identifying important issues that have been largely neglected. The Units of Selection debate is a dispute about the causes of population change. I argue that it is generated by a particular `dynamical'' interpretation of natural selection theory, according to which natural selection causes differential survival and reproduction of individuals and natural selection explanations cite these causes. I argue that the dynamical interpretation is mistaken and offer in outline an alternative, `statistical'' interpretation, according to which natural selection theory is a fancy kind of `bookkeeping''. It explains by citing the (...) statistical structure of a population and not by citing the causes of survival and reproduction. From the perspective of the statistical interpretation there is no substantive Units of Selection issue. (shrink)

Beaucoup de « géomètres » du XIXe siècle - Bernhard Riemann, Hermann von Helmholtz, Felix Klein, Riccardo De Paolis, Mario Pieri, Henri Poincaré, Federigo Enriques, et autres - ont joué un rôle important dans la discussion sur les fondements des mathématiques. Mais, contrairement aux idées d'Euclide, ils n'ont pas identifié «l'espace physique» avec« l'espace de nos sens». Partant de notre expérience dans l'espace, ils ont cherché à identifier les propriétés les plus importantes de l'espace et les ont posées à (...) la base de la géométrie. C'est sur la connaissance active de l'espace que les axiomes de la géométrie ont été élaborés ; ils ne pouvaient donc pas être a priori comme ils le sont dans la philosophie kantienne. En outre, pendant la dernière décade du siècle, certains mathématiciens italiens - De Paolis, Gino Fano, Pieri, et autres - ont fondé le concept de nombre sur la géométrie, en employant des résultats de la géométrie projective. Ainsi, on fondait l'arithmétique sur la géométrie et non l'inverse, comme David Hilbert a cherché à faire quelques années après, sans succès. (shrink)

Il cinquantennio a cavallo tra '200 e '300 rappresenta il periodo più stimolante e creativo per la riflessione sul rapporto tra necessità e contingenza e tra intelletto e volontà. L'A. analizza la difesa compiuta da Giovanni della tesi scotista sulla contingenza della fruizione beatifica, ossia sulla possibilità che il beato, in presenza della stessa essenza divina, possa mantenere la propria capacità di scelta, al punto tale da poter essere in grado di non abbandonarsi all'amore verso di Dio. Prima di analizzare (...) in modo più dettagliato il pensiero del Reading, l'A. passa in rassegna le posizioni di Duns Scoto, Roberto Cowton, Riccardo di Conington, Guglielmo d'Occam, Pietro Aureolo che, in terra francese, diversamente da Francesco di Meyronnes e Giovanni di Bassoles, non aderì alla tesi scotista della contingenza della fruizione. All'interno di questo programma teorico Reading si oppone innanzitutto ai teologi inglesi che, legati a posizioni tradizionali, sostenevano la necessità in via come in patria della fruizione del sommo bene colto come concetto o contemplato come essenza. Nella teologia trinitaria di Enrico di Gand, e in particolare nell'uso della nozione di verbum mentis, confluiscono ad avviso dell'A. tre diverse tradizioni che vengono rielaborate in un sistema coerente dal maestro agostiniano. La prima, quella cui aderiscono Tommaso e Bonaventura, insiste sul fatto che le persone sono distinte tra loro proprie per mezzo di relazioni opposte. La seconda, rappresentata da Riccardo di san Vittore, che attribuisce la differenza tra le persone al loro diverso modo di emanazione e di (...) origine. La terza che riprende il modello psicologico della trinità di Agostino ed in particolare l'immagine del Figlio come Verbum. Enrico incorpora i diversi elementi di queste tradizioni in modo originale e sostiene che il Figlio è distinto dalle altre due persone in base al diverso modo di emanazione , ma che è diverso dal Padre e dallo Spirito Santo anche perché è Verbum. L'A. sottolinea la notevole influenza esercitata da Bonaventura sul pensiero trinitario di Enrico, anche dal punto di vista della terminologia utilizzata e ipotizza che ciò sia dovuto al ruolo di «propaganda» delle dottrine bonaventuriane svolto da Ruggero Marston e Matteo d'Aquasparta. In this article, we develop an approach for the moral assessment of research and development networks on the basis of the reflective equilibrium approach proposed by Rawls and Daniels. The reflective equilibrium approach aims at coherence between moral judgments, principles, and background theories. We use this approach because it takes seriously the moral judgments of the actors involved in R & D, whereas it also leaves room for critical reflection about these judgments. It is shown that two norms, namely reflective (...) learning and openness and inclusiveness, which are used in the literature on policy and technological networks, contribute to achieving a justified overlapping consensus. We apply the approach to a case study about the development of an innovative sewage treatment technology and show how in this case the two norms are or could be instrumental in achieving a justified overlapping consensus on relevant moral issues.
